On November 28, 2013 the specialists of the All-Russian Scientific-research institute of aviation materials (VIAM) Alexander Raskutin and Alla Rodina took part in a meeting of representatives of partner-companies participating in PoLaRBEAR project devoted to its launching that was held in the German Aerospace Center (DLR)* (Braunschweig).
According to Alexander Raskutin, “the context of the meeting included the discussion of organizational issues, program of works, and definition of the task plan for the project”.
It should be noted that PoLaRBEAR international project (Production Aspects Of Lattice Related Barrel Elements With Advanced Reliability) will be realized as a part of the Seventh EC Program for Aerospace Research and Technology.
The main task of VIAM is to work out an effective protection of lattice load-carrying structural elements from impact and climatic loads. Earlier VIAM successfully participated as a partner in ALCAS** and AEROMAG*** projects of the Sixth framework program.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PoLaRBEAR project is meant for 3 years to continue the activities within the frames of the joint project between EU and Russia in the sphere of development of prospective aviation structures on the basis of geodesic (lattice) technology oriented to a significant increase of reliability and technological availability of the structure. The goal of the project is to provide efficient interaction in the filed of development of light and low-cost fuselage structures made of new-generation composite materials based on geodesic/isogrid technologies. According to all accounts, the project shall fortify the research and innovation collaboration between the European Union and Russia in the sphere of civil transport aviation.
Tasks of PoLaRBEAR Research Project:
• development of highly-automated technology for cost-effective fuselage manufacture;
• ensuring of advanced reliability of geodesic structures in operation;
• determination of design standards for reliable lattice structure.
The Project consortium includes 12 participants. European organizations: German Aerospace Center (DLR) (Germany), Braunschweig Technical University (Germany), University of Leeds (Great Britain), AIRBUS Operations GmbH (Germany), MSC Software GmbH (Germany), SMR enterprise (Switzerland). Among Russian participants are: TsAGI, VIAM, The Central Research Institute for Special Machinery (TSNIISM), scientific-engineering company ‘NIK-Samara”, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, D.Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. The functions of PoLaRBEAR coordinator from the European side are performed by DLR. Coordinator from the Russian side is TsAGI under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.
* German Aerospace Center (DLR) is an independent non-commercial scientific and research organization whose main tasks include researches in the sphere of aviation, aerospace, power engineering and transport, development and operation of test equipment, management of aerospace projects and implementation of Space agency functions.
**ALCAS – Advanced Low Cost Aircraft Structures.
***AEROMAG – Aeronautical Application of Wrought Magnesium.
