Representatives of VIAM, Victor Murashov, Darya Lozhkova and Valery Bondareva took part in the fifth European-American workshop on Reliability of NDE held on October 7-10, 2013. The workshop was held in Berlin at the Federal institute for materials and testing (BAM) and was organized by the European federation of non-destructive testing (EF NDT) and the German society of non-destructive testing (DGZfP).
On October 7, the employees of VIAM heard a number of reports of leading European and American experts on new methods of non-destructive testing, reliability of methods of material researches and tests. «In particular, the POD system allowing to evaluate probability of defects detection, to take into consideration the operation capabilities of the used test method and equipment and also human factor was discussed», informed Victor Murashov.
The second day of the workshop was devoted to practical problems of control in aerospace and other industries where reliability of researches and safety are of great importance. Then an excursion to laboratories was organized to demonstrate the methods and means of non-destructive testing for solution of practical tasks and ensuring high reliability of researches and tests of materials.
Reports of VIAM representatives were presented on October 9. Doctor of Engineering Science Victor Murashov, the chief research worker of VIAM, made the report «Types of Production and Operational Defects of the Multilayer Glued Constructions and Polymer Composite Materials Products and Methods to Detect Them». Various defects of solid parts and multi-layer constructions made from polymer composite materials broken into seven groups according to the degree of their hazard were considered in his report. Methods and means for detection of macro- and microdefects of PCM structure, determination of physical and mechanical properties of materials were specified. The report of Victor Murashov provoked a great interest of participants of the workshop.
Darya Lozhkova informed of assessment of detection probability of hard a-inclusions in titanium alloys in case by the automated ultrasonic control («POD Evaluation of Automated Ultrasonic Detection of Hard Alpha Inclusions in Titanium Alloys»). Some newest achievements of VIAM in the field of assessment of ultrasonic control reliability in terms of titanium alloy disk billets were considered in the report. Darya Lozhkova told in details about techniques to manufacture special specimens with artificial gas-saturated inclusions (GSI) of a given size and about the subsequent research of these specimens with use of ultrasonic immersion unit. In addition, POD curve constructed by the results of field tests was demonstrated. Furthermore, the problem of experiment modification by the use not only the data obtained during field tests, but also the information received by mathematical simulation of GSI echo signals in case of ultrasonic immersion control was mentioned in her report.
Valeriya Bondareva presented the report «MPT Inspection of Helicopters Driving Roller Chains Parts». The report was devoted to the technique of magnetic powder inspection of driving roller chain parts, calculation of the optimum modes of magnetization and demagnetization of the objects under testing and selection of indicator materials providing the control with a desired level of sensitivity.
«Participation of VIAM delegation in the workshop was a question of great scientific and practical importance as it allowed our employees to examine the newest technologies of non-destructive testing, to put questions to leading scientists from different countries and to participate in discussions», Victor Murashov said in this regard.
