On December 3^rd, 2021 the leader-forum “Additive Technologies. Expanding the Horizons” took place in online format. The participants discussed trends and tendencies of the development of this branch of industry and new technologies, considered the examples of their successful implementation as well as the issues and problems of import substitution. 

Svyatoslav Nerush, the head of scientific-research bureau «Technologies of powder metallurgy, additive production, welding, protective and special high-temperature coatings and materials» of the NRC “Kurchatov Institute – VIAM” took part in the general assembly of the forum.

Svyatoslav Nerush stated that in 2020 VIAM produced and supplied the companies of the branch with about 800 third-level parts, while in 2021 this amount already reached 5000 parts. “This is an indicator of how actively the additive technologies are implemented in the Russian Federation. – He mentioned. – Our institute fully supplied a want of metal powder compositions for additive manufacturing. The next step we are to take in this field is ceramic and high-temperature polymer materials.”    

In his telling, the major issue is still the development of domestic equipment and software. “The specialists of the institute have developed the assessment procedures of the home-made equipment. We are ready to assist our colleagues in this issue.” – He emphasized. 

Speaking of staff training Svyatoslav Nerush mentioned the active work of the institute in this field: each year at least 10 master’s students in additive technologies graduate from VIAM as well as thesis researches are performed and Candidate’s dissertations are defended annually.  

The leader-forum is organized by the Association of Additive Technologies Development, including the NRC “Kurchatov Institute – VIAM”, the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM, the State Space Corporation ROSCOSMOS, the "Almaz – Antey" Air and Space Defense Corporation" and “Gazprom Neft” PJSC. The Association is designed to be a unified platform for discussions on the development of solid position of the enterprises of the additive technologies branch as well as to be a single authority for cooperation with the state and backbone institutions.
