The All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM) together with the Cienfuegos Center of the Ecological Studies (CEAC) fulfills a conjoint project on studying of the capabilities of the island tropical ecosystems to degradation of polymer materials through the example of Cuba.

This project is subsidized by the Ministry of science and higher education of the Russian Federation.

The research is aimed at the study of bio-degradation of plastics widely used in industry under the impact of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) which can be found in the soil cover of the Cuba Island.

During the performance of this project there will be developed the production strategy of utilization of the examined plastics through their exposure to microorganisms of the island ecosystem as well as there will be performed the division of the Republic of Cuba into districts according to the bioburden.

The implementation of the results will allow developing the generic method of treatment of synthetic plastics waste exposed to the most aggressive microorganisms or their consortia which can be further applied in the Russian Federation.
