On May 22-24 the International Conference “Corrosion in the Oil & Gas Industry” took place in Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU). For the first time in Russia the representatives of the largest oil & gas and oilfield service companies, metallurgical plants, equipment manufacturers and scientific and engineering facilities. Almost 500 participants attended the Conference; about 100 of them were the experts from more than 15 countries around the world.   

One of the mainstays in the problems of oil & gas infrastructure reliable operation is the question of durability of the materials. Corrosion and related processes are the main factors decreasing the reliability. These problems appear on all stages of hydrocarbon products production cycle; the losses of companies caused by equipment failure and repair works, hold-ups, lost profit are the hundreds of millions of dollars. Thus, one of the main tasks to be solved и the international oil & gas association of companies is the development of complex and often nonstandard solutions of increasing of the equipment reliability and material protection form the aggressive influence of the operation conditions.   

At the Conference the Head of the Testing Center of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM TC) Andrey V. Slavin made a report about the training of the specialists in the field of “Corrosion, aging, biodeterioration”.  

Among other things he presented the project of development of the research and education center for training of the corrosion engineers on the basis of the G.V. Akimov Gelendzhik climatic testing center.  

Structurally the research and education center is a research and education association aimed to form the corresponding basis for the development of the “Protection from corrosion, aging and biodeterioration” field. The high-priority tasks are the following: development of the educational programs, standards and courses with further training of the specialists, Masters and postgraduate students as well as development of digital simulation technologies and uniform system of protection from corrosion, aging and biodeterioration. 

As Andrey Slavin has stated, “the creation of a center of the basis of V. Akimov GCTC of VIAM allows solving the problem of specialists training. The research, development and engineering works conducted here will help to reduce losses caused by failure, hold-ups, loss of productivity of complex technical systems and infrastructure in the Russian Federation”.  

It is necessary to add that the Conference was organized by the Center of Competence of the National Technological Initiative (NTI) of SPbPU “Advanced Production technologies” together with international association of corrosion engineers NACE International  sponsored by the European Federation of Corrosion EFC.
