On November, 25, 2015 Vladimir V. Putin, President of the Russian Federation congratulated Alexander A. Inozemtsev, General Designer of JSC “Aviadvigatel” and all creative team on the beginning of flight tests of the newest aircraft engine PD-14 at the past Presidium of State Council in Nizhni Tagil.
The head of the state noted, that within nearly thirty-year history of national engine-building we have had no such event, as we witness today. “The recent event”, he said, “is the creation of a new PD-14 engine, which was initially designed as the basic engine for MS-21 aircrafts. But in practice the engine was developed for the whole line of national aviation, and I’m sure, it will be used at gas transmission stations and other facilities, where such aggregates are necessary”. According to Vladimir Putin, it is a great success in national industry, national aircraft engineering and engine-building.
It should be remembered, that a decision to develop PD-14 was made in July 2008. When Vladimir Putin visited VIAM and supported an initiative of Academician of RAS, Evgeny N. Kablov, Director General of the institute and Alexander A. Inozemtsev, General Designer of JSC “Aviadvigatel” to develop new domestic gas turbine engine.
The employees of VIAM contributed immensely to develop materials of new generation and technologies for PD-14.
In particular, 20 new materials were developed; more than 50 grades of materials were reworked, an output of these semi-finished materials was organized at metallurgical plants and also all necessary regulatory technological documents were issued for production of PD-14 components.
For the first time in national engineering and technologic practice, PD-14 engine nacelle from polymer composite materials was designed and produced. VIAM developed and produced prepregs, carbon fiber plastics and glass fiber plastics for components and aggregates of engine nacelle. They are comparable by characteristics to the best world analogs.
Besides, VIAM produced a “combat” component of PD-14 engine – front combustion chamber swirler, using additive technologies from domestic metal-powder composition. It is necessary to mention, that the technological cycle lasts only six days with 100% yield, while the traditional technological cycle - investment casting – lasts 60 days with 40% yield. At that, labour efficiency was increased by ten times.
At the end of October, a decision about readiness of flying laboratory IL-76LL to the first test flight with pilot propulsion system PD-14 was made at the meeting of the Presidium of the Methodological Council of experimental aviation on flight tests at M.M. Gromov Flight Research Institute. The first flight of PD-14 engine took place in the presence of Dmitry Rogozin, Vice-Prime Minister of RF at M.M. Gromov Flight Research Institute on November 3, 2015. The flight lasted about 40 minutes and was in strict accordance with the flight program. During the tests parameters of all components and systems of engine were monitored.
