On March 11, 2015 the second meeting in the frames of a creative project “Synkletos at VIAM” took place in the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials.
Senior scientist of VIAM, candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences Natalia A. Kuzmina became another guest of the “Synkletos”. She has prepared an interesting story about Evgeny F. Bakhmetev – a VIAM scientist, remarkable expert in the field of X-ray diffraction study of metals and alloys. Natalia Kuzmina collected facts and materials about the scientist in her article published in the "The history of science and technology" journal.
The opening remarks to the conference were done by the head of the Intellectual Property division, candidate of the technical science Dmitry E. Kablov. "It is remarkable that our team holds interesting, talented people who take the time and effort to study the history of the institute and people, who worked here, were pioneers of VIAM" - he said.
After that Natalia Kuzmina has invited the attention of the participants to her report "History of VIAM in the fate of employees. Evgeny Bakhmetev - head of laboratory in VIAM from 1932 to 1935. A look into the past and prospects for the future".
She has spoken about previously unknown events of Evgeny Bakhmetev biography as well as the search for rare materials devoted to his professional activities. According to her, the new facts about this amazing man were discovered in the course of research. For example, studying his autobiography, she was able to collect information about the difficult childhood and early years of the scientist in the end of XIX - early XX century; VIAM reports of 30s became an evidence of his contribution to the X-ray diffraction study of duralumin and development of the recrystallization theory. During the archive study at Kostroma Technical University, new data on the period of life Evgeny Bakhmetev after his arrest in 1935 to repression in June 1941 were discovered.
"The further fate of Evgeny Bakhmetev was reconstructed from a book of memoirs of his students, world renowned scientists Lev Altshuler, Veniamin Tsukerman and Vitaly Ginzburg", - she said.
Speaking about the importance of such historical research, Natalia Kuzmina noted that recently VIAM was accredited as an educational institution, so it can and must publish schoolbooks and methodical literature. "I think that the first chapter of each of these books should be a historical review, which will reveal the history of a particular scientific field. It should be borne in mind that in addition to the basic calculations and technological recommendations the schoolbook should contain a single complete glossary of terms",- said the speaker. Moreover, according to Natalia Kuzmina, "VIAM as State Research Center can and has the right to initiate a national project for development of a new technical encyclopedia to unify scientific language".
In conclusion Natalia Kuzmina answered numerous questions from the audience and thanked all the participants for their genuine interest in the life and work of a man of amazing destiny - Evgeny Bakhmetev.
NOTE:
The project "Synkletos at VIAM" is an initiative of the Council of young scientists and specialists of the Institute. “Synkletos” is a meeting place with scientists, culture personalities and artists, journalists, representatives of social and political associations that are in the "live communication" talk on their professional and creative activities.
Kuzmina Natalia Alexandrovna graduated from M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University with a degree in "Geochemistry" in 1991 (geologist and geochemist qualification). She worked at the V.I. Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of RAS. In 1996 she defended her thesis on "Synthesis, X-ray and Mossbauer research of ferrum-silicate analogues of feldspars and feldspathoids". Since 2004 he has been working in VIAM as a senior researcher in the laboratory No 1. She is fond of painting: in 2011 she won the 2nd place in the competition to create a sketch idea of the monument to the victims of the Holocaust in Lubavitch village, and in 2012 - 1st place in the competition of stands dedicated to the 80th anniversary of VIAM.
