On January 14^th, 2020 the Director General of the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation Alexey E. Likhachev visited the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM).

During the visit Alexey Likhachev got acquainted with the scientific and production base, main directions of activities and inventions of VIAM in the field of manufacturing of the new generation materials.

The VIAM Director General, Academician of RAS Evgeny N. Kablov noted that “there are 25 scientific and production complexes manufacturing more than 250 items of materials. The materials developed by the VIAM specialists serve to solve various strategic tasks in aviation and mechanical engineering, space industry, energy production and other spheres”.

Alexey Likhachev paid attention to the VIAM inventions in the field of polymer, ceramic and metallic composite materials which are in-demand not only in aircraft engineering but in many other branches of industry. By the way, the VIAM scientists have developed more than 300 brands of polymer composite materials; the new materials not only meet but also exceed the foreign analogues in the number of properties.

Moreover, the Institute capabilities in additive technologies were also demonstrated to the head of “Rosatom”. Alexey Likhachev saw the samples of aerospace engineering parts produced by selective laser melting and got acquainted with the Institute inventions in this sphere. It is necessary to note that VIAM is the only enterprise possessing the end-to-end cycle of additive manufacturing – from an idea and design to industrial production and products supply.

During the visit Alexey Likhachev also got acquainted with the production of high-tech equipment, VIAM competencies in casting of gas-turbine unit and engine single crystal blades and electron-beam and laser-hybrid welding.

It should be noted that the heads of both VIAM and “Rosatom” discussed the promising trends in cooperation in the field of materials and production technologies of a new generation. The management of TVEL Fuel Company, JSC “RusAt”, JSC “Science and Innovation” and ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. also participated in the meeting.

Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation was established on December 18^th, 2017. “Rosatom” is the biggest energy producer in Russia covering more than 18% of country’s power demands. The scope of activity of the corporation also includes equipment manufacturing and isotopic products for nuclear medicine, scientific researches, materials science, supercomputers and software, production of various nuclear and non-nuclear products. The state corporation combines about 400 enterprises and companies including the only in the world nuclear icebreaking fleet with all together almost 250,000 people working there.
