The Russian Federation Government Science and Engineering Award was granted to the writing team of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM) by the Decree of the Russian Federation Government of November 29th, 2019.
The prize winners are: Mikhail M. Bakradze, Vladislav V. Antipov, Alexander V. Sviridov, Denis V. Kapitanenko, Mikhail A. Kryukov, Maxim S. Gribkov, and Mikhail N. Letnikov.
The Specialists of the Institute were awarded for the development and manufacturing application of assembly technology and electron-beam welding of the rotor shafts of turbo-compressors of the diesel locomotive diesel-generator sets made of structural steel with disks made of nickel-based super alloys; these rotor shafts are manufactured by means of high-capacity in-air isothermal deformation.
This technology was implemented to JSC “Penzadieselmash”, which allowed increasing the products performance standards of the Penza factory. Due to the work performed by the VIAM and JSC “Penzadieselmash” specialists there was developed the production of domestic turbo-compressors with rotor shafts produced by means of electron-beam welding of dissimilar materials; that allowed to increase the life time of turbo-compressors for up to 400,000 hours, 1.5 time increase of time between overhauls and 50% reduction of labor input for mechanical treatment and assembly.
At present there are more than 200 locomotives in operation, all of them are equipped with turbocharger systems with welded rotors; their operating life exceeds 150,000 km.
