On April 12, 2018, on the Cosmonautics Day, representatives of the Council of young scientists and specialists of the All-Russian Scientific-Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM) laid flowers to the monument of Yuri Gagarin on Leninsky Prospekt.
It should be noted, that VIAM made a contribution to develop this monument. Special titanium alloy produced by VIAM`s scientists was required to successfully bring the ideas of sculptor P.I. Bondarenko and architect Ya.B. Belopolisky to realization. In addition, the institute jointly with the National Institute of Aviation Technologies (NIAT) developed the special technology for casting and electron-beam welding.
In July 1980, on the eve of the Olympics games, a solemn opening of the monument to Yu.A. Gagarin was held, who became the symbol of space conquest by man.
