On October 24, 2017, students of Department MT-8 “Materials science” of Bauman Moscow State University visited the All-Russian Scientific-Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM).

Within the framework of studying the discipline “Intellectual, adaptive materials and coatings”, students were told about current direction of materials science – intellectual materials.

“Today our institute is working on these materials, including informcomposite, which are materials with integrated sensitive elements, for example, fiber optic materials”, - said Vladimir Makhsidov, division head of laboratory of technologies and manufacture of polymer composite materials.

Besides, the guests viewed the advantages of production of frame construction from informcomposite on demonstrator as well as they were shown the advantages of optical fiber sensors over strain indicators, the capability to determine deformation of materials and construction, assessment of its condition.

The students were interested in the model of automobile arch bridge with the use of arch elements from PCM with integrated optical fiber sensors and installed monitoring system of materials and constructions, which had been built in Yazykovo of the Ulyanovsk region.
