System of continuous training of highly skilled staff
A continuous system of highly trained specialists has been formed and has been functioning for many years at VIAM:
School(college)>university >post-graduate course >defense of candidate thesis > defense of doctor thesis.
The important constituent part of this system is a department of Moscow state evening metallurgical institute (MSEMI), founded in 2001 on a base of VIAM. To provide VIAM structural departments with technicians, laboratory assistants and workers the institute gives an employment to school-leavers of schools, providing general education and colleges, which, on a basis of agreements about contract preparation of specialists for special purpose continue their education at MSEMI without discontinuing work. Organization of that form of studies seemed to be convenient and effective both for enterprise and students: in the day time they work, but in the evening they attend lectures of leading scientists and teachers in specially equipped lecture-halls. At present 70 employees of the institute are the students of MSEMI department, 52 graduating students of 2007–2011 are working at the institute, getting a profession of “engineer”. Four of them are raising their qualification in graduate studentship, one graduating student defended his thesis.
The base faculty «Aviation materials science» of MATI-RGTU after the name of K.E.Tsiolkovsky has been arranged at VIAM and is working under the leadership of academician of RAS, professor E.N.Kablov.
VIAM cooperates actively with the faculty «Materials science» (МТ-8) of N.E. Bauman MSTU, headed by academician of RAS, professor E.N.Kablov.
The main purpose of faculties is a preparation of highly trained specialists for departments of the institute against professions in the field of aviation materials science.
The most successful students in their 5 and 6 year are hired for job to VIAM, do practical training and predegree practice, defend diplomas. 184 students did their practical training at VIAM for the period of 2007–2011.
According to an agreement with the institute, K. E. Tsiolkovsky Russian State Technological University (MATI) provides education of specialists for Gelendjik climatic testing center, VIAM branch. Selection of applicants among graduates of the secondary school No. 3 of Gelendjik is carries out by field selection committee of two institutes. Presently, 23 students study at MATI, 6 students from them combine their study with work at VIAM. Since 2009 the first four graduates have been successfully working at VIAM branch in Gelendjik and two graduates of 2010 work at VIAM and continue their study in the MATI postgraduate school.
VIAM collaborates with institutions of secondary professional education (Moscow college of aviation engine building, Moscow industrial-economic college, Moscow polytechnic college, colleges No.No. 13, 27 and 39) and with higher educational institutions (K. E. Tsiolkovsky Moscow State Aviation Technology University, D. I. Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia, National University of Science and Technology “MISiS”, MGVMI and others), whose students do practical training (from introduction practical training up to pre-degree practice) in the institute’s departments. For the period between 2008 and 2010, 336 students of higher educational institutions and colleges did their work and pre-degree practices at VIAM. Between 2009 and 2011, 82 graduates out of 168 students who had done practical training were hired for work at the institute.
Provision on a support of young specialists was drawn up and is acting at VIAM. In accordance with this Proposition during first three years of work extra increments to basis salary are paid to them.
Training of specialists of higher education at VIAM is realized by the highest level of teaching staff; there is a good training facility (3 classrooms with 57 studying seats, 2 computer classrooms equipped with 12 computers with the access to Internet, 2 classrooms with 10 studying seats) as well as research complexes with modern equipment.
The Council of Young Scientists and Specialists acts continuously at the institute, it represents the interests of different scientific areas and engineering services. Young scientists and specialists of VIAM combine the scientific and organizational work as heads of departments, laboratories, sectors, they are appointed as heads and responsible executors of scientific themes. This allows to plan the career of a young specialist from the start of his work, to form the staff reserve of the future leaders of VIAM. Following the recommendation of the Council, young specialists are promoted and their salaries are raised correspondingly. The members of the Council take an active part in the annual certification of young specialists and their tutors’ work, in awarding scholarship to post-graduate students and prepare their offers to award the best tutors.
Annually, by results of scientific and manufacturing activity of young specialists the Council forms and presents for approval of Presidium of VIAM’ Scientific Technical Council a composition of young specialists delegation for participation in youth international exhibitions and conferences abroad (Junior Euromat, Switzerland and etc.)
Policy of institute leaders in the sphere of young specialists support confirms its efficiency by high results: in 2011
D.V. Grashchenkov and N.E. Uvarova became laureates of the price of the RF President in the field of science and innovations for young scientists for the year of 2010.
For training of the highest qualification stuff the specialized Dissertation council D 403.001.01, approved by the Order of Federal Education and Science Supervision Service of Ministry of Education and Science of Russia dtd 18.04.2008 г. № 737-571, and a post-graduation («License for the right to perform an educational activity АА . 002372 dtd 28.09.2009 »).
Postgraduate school of VIAM carries out training of applicants for the following professions:
05.16.09 – materials science (machine building);
05.16.01 – metal science and heat treatment of metals and alloys;
05.17.06 – production technology and processing of polymers and composites.
Number of postgraduates is 73 people, 12 applicants. VIAM concludes an agreement for training with each postgraduate, which regulates the rights and duties of the parties, training terms and order. 32 employees are involved in the academic advising to postgraduates and applicants, including 14 doctors of sciences, out of which 4 professors, 3 assistant professors and 1 academician of RAS.
The work of the postgraduate school is organized in accordance with the annual plans approved by the institute’s management; the plans specify the control over the training process in the form of postgraduate students’ reports on the preparation of their thesis at the Presidium of the Scientific-Technical Council of the institute. Preparation of the candidate pool to matriculate in the postgraduate school selected from the institute’s personnel participating in the scientific-research activity and scientific and technical conferences, symposiums, exhibitions and having scientific publications and patents is carried out.
Since 2006 the institute’s management awards annually personal scholarships to the best postgraduates: 110 postgraduates were awarded scholarships named after outstanding Soviet and Russian scientists worked at VIAM:
- Academician of the Academy of Science of the USSR and RAS S. T. Kishkin – in the field of heat-resistant and refractory alloys;
- Academician of the Academy of Science of the USSR and RAS I. N. Friedlyander – in the field of light alloys;
- Academician of the Academy of Science of the USSR K. A. Andrianov – in the field of polymer materials;

For the years of 2007–2011 by the resolution of Dissertation Council of the institute and the Higher Attestation Commission the scientific degree of Candidate of Engineering Sciences was conferred on twenty employees and the degree of Doctor of Technical Science was conferred on five employees.
High qualification of VIAM post-graduates is confirmed by grants of the President of RF, diplomas of all-Russian competitions, publications in authoritative scientific magazines in Russia and abroad.
The main conditions of involvement and assignment of graduates of higher education institutes and secondary schools at VIAM are as follows: actuality and scientific-technological novelty of the work offered to the young specialists, the results of the work are of high demand; possibility to perfect their professional level under the leadership of mentors; the salary-and-bonus payment system and the fund for financial support of young specialists; vigorous activity of the Council of young specialists and scientists.
