At present time, VIAM carries out its activities in five priority areas and seven critical directions of development of science technologies and equipment in the Russian Federation approved by Decree No. 899 of the President of the Russian Federation dated July 7, 2011 and in three priority areas of modernization and technical development specified by the Message to the Federal Council of the Russian Federation of November 12, 2009.
The institute participates directly in implementing the eight Federal target programs, “A development strategy of FSUE “VIAM” for a period from 2012 to 2016” was elaborated on the basis of “Strategic development priorities of materials and technologies for their processing for a period until 2030” approved at the meeting of the scientific and technical council of the Military and industrial commission of the Government of the Russian Federation (Minutes No. MIC (STC)-27pr dated 02.12.2011).
VIAM is coordinator of the technological platform “New polymer composite materials and technologies” developed by the initiative of VIAM, JSC Rusnano, state corporation “ROSTEC”, RAS, state corporation “Rosatom” and holding company “Composite” with the support of the Governments of Tatarstan and Saratov Region with involvement of some leading research, training and production organizations.
VIAM is a coordinator and JSC “RT-Metallurgiya” and National University of Science and Technology “MISiS” are co-coordinators of the technological platform “Metallurgical materials and technologies” developed by an initiative of VIAM, state corporation “ROSTEC”, JSC “RT Metallurgiya”, state corporation “Rosatom”, RAS, FSUE “I. P. Bardin TsNIIchermet”, FSUE Central Research Institute of Structural Materials “Prometey” and managing company “Aluminum products”.
These platforms were approved on April 1, 2011 by a decision of the government commission for innovative and high technologies.
Under the management of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia and by an initiative of VIAM, state corporation “ROSTEC”, state corporation “Rosatom”, RAS, Federal Space Agency “Roskosmos”, Roshydromet, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, FSE 4th Central Scientific Research Institute of Ministry of Defense of RF with the involvement of some leading research and production enterprises it was possible to develop a draft technological platform “National network of climatic testing centers” where VIAM acts as a project coordinator.
In order to solve tasks associated with protection and support of leading scientific schools of the world-wide recognition and development of the scientific potential, VIAM trains specialists of the highest qualification in its post-graduate studies in three programs as well as qualified engineers for the institute’s departments at its sub-faculties jointly established with K. E. Tsiolkovsky Russian State Technological University (“MATI”), Bauman Moscow State Technical University and Moscow State Part-Time University of Metallurgy. VAIM has concluded an Agreement for technical cooperation with seven national research universities of Russia and actively cooperates with foreign universities in Germany and the Netherlands.
Creation of multifunctional materials and technologies is only possible on the basis of comprehensive fundamental and applied studies and close cooperation of science and industry. This is vividly proved by a fruitful cooperation of our institute with 30 institutes of RAS, 16 universities and over 70 enterprises – leading institutes, design bureaus and aviation plants and other industrial branches.
The institute has established long-term partner relations and signed cooperation agreements for joint activities in the field of regional innovative system, modernization and technological development of economy in the Republics of Tatarstan and Mordovia, Saratov and Tomsk regions, Khabarovsk territory.
All these years the main link of the institute’s organizational structure has been a research laboratory. Today, 36 laboratories of the institute jointly with production departments work in 16 scientific areas: casting and wrought heat-resistant and intermetallic alloys; steels; heat-resistant coatings; light and superlight alloys, composite and non-metal materials of different functional purposes.

VIAM's experimental and test base includes 19 scientific and technological complexes and carries out research and tests of materials, the institute also set up small-scale production of materials. These complexes are centers for transfer of technologies.
Every year VIAM files 40–50 applications for inventions that are 100% patent protected. The number of intellectual property assets owned by the institute: in 2006 – 737 and in 2010 – 816. At present VIAM has patented 23 inventions that are valid in the USA, Canada, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, Brazil, PRC and etc.
In 2002, 2007 and 2012 the President of the Russian Federation expressed his Appreciation to VIAM for a significant contribution to the creation of new materials and technologies for aviation industry.
