On September 23, 2016, the II International scientific and technical conference “Corrosion, ageing and bioproofness of materials in maritime climate was held within the framework of “Gidroaviasalon-2016” at G.V. Akimov Gelendzhik Climatic Testing Center (GCTC of VIAM). The event was devoted to the 115th anniversary of the birth of George V. Akimov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor.
More than 100 people, including representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, State corporations and integrated structures, design bureaus, enterprises of aviation industry, state scientific centers of RF, institutes of RAS and national-research universities took part in the work of the conference.
Academician of RAS, Evgeny N. Kablov, Director General of VIAM opened the plenary meeting. He thanked the attendees for their interest in the conference and wished them fruitful and effective work.
The Leader of VIAM reminded that George Akimov was the founder of the soviet scientific school of corrosion engineers. “In his work George Akimov laid the foundation for research of corrosion of metals and alloys. His works were translated into many languages, published in different countries and enriched the world science dealing with corrosion”, - Evgeny Kablov pointed out.
“The branch of VIAM – Gelendzhik Climatic Testing Center named after him, - the Leader of the institute said. – In 2009 new possibilities of researches of corrosion processes appeared after the Center began to work. It is the only scientific climatic testing center in Russia, allowing to perform complex tests of materials, components of structures and articles”.
Further Evgeny Kablov made a report “Development of climatic tests of materials and structural elements: results and prospects”.
He reported, that the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) continued to observe a growth trend of direct losses due to corrosion. If direct losses were 2,2 trillion US dollars five years ago, then they have increased up to 2,5 trillion US dollars in two years.
According to him, rapid growth of aggressiveness of environment in consequence of industrial emissions and pollution has been proved as of today. Approximately 50 per cent of technical failures are caused by biocorrosion. “In that regard monitoring of aggressiveness of atmosphere with consideration for industrial emissions in the Russian Federation including in the Arctic is the object of state level, which requires joint efforts and consistent methodical approach”, - Evgeny Kablov pointed out.
Evgeny Kablov also declared that a project on establishment of net of climatic testing centers had been developed in our country. In accordance with the project it is provided to establish seven regional centers in representational climatic zones of Russia. According to him, it is important to carry out full-scale tests in the most aggressive climatic conditions – in zone of marine tropics. “Therefore VIAM initiated a question to establish climatic station in the territory of the Republic of Cuba. With the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, Minpromtorg of Russia and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the Republic of Cuba, the Cooperation Agreement between VIAM and the Center of Environmental Studies of Cienfuegos was signed in July 2016. Soon the first samples will be sent for climatic tests to Cienfuegos”, - he concluded.
