On May 17, 2016 a meeting with schoolchildren – participants of the contest “Materials scientist of the future”, as well as their parents and teachers was held at the All-Russian Scientific-Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM).
The contest is held by VIAM with the support of Department of Science, Industrial Policy and Enterprise of the Moscow Government. Its purpose is to enhance scientific and innovative potential of the capital, to involve young people into high-technological branches of domestic industry. Winners of the contest will gain prerogative right to enter Bauman Moscow State Technical University (BMSTU), Dmitry Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (MUCTR), Moscow State University of Fine Chemical Technologies (MITHT) and Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). Besides, students will have a possibility to carry out practical scientific researches in laboratories and at production site of VIAM during their study at universities. After graduation they will be able to start their carrier at the institute as well as to have an opportunity to do master and postgraduate studies at VIAM.
Opening the meeting Academician of RAS Evgeny N. Kablov, Director General of VIAM told that “materials are the foundation of Russian economy and national security.” In this regard, he cited the words of Vladimir Putin, the President of RF, who had noted perspective and significance of engineer-materials scientist for our country at a meeting with students of National Research Nuclear University “Moscow Engineering Physics Institute” (MEPhi).
According to Leader of VIAM, it is impossible to develop new materials without new knowledge. “Your priority should be to obtain knowledge. This is the most expensive commodity, which is valued all over the world”, - he pointed out.
Evgeny Kablov also noted that young people had been recently more interested in technical sciences. “I can observe such trends at our institute, where middle age of employees is 43 years, almost 60% of the collective is under the age of 35”, - Director General of VIAM declared.
He also told the guests about the history of domestic materials science, unique developments of VIAM`s scientists and the main directions of the work of the institute. In conclusion, Evgeny Kablov wished good luck to the competitors and expressed confidence that many of them would have interesting, fascinating and honorary carriers. “I hope very much, that after graduation of the universities you will come to VIAM and will successfully work on strengthening independency and defensive capacity of our country”, - Leader of VIAM said.
Then Evgeny D. Pribavchenko, Chairman of Department of Science, Industrial Policy and Enterprise of the Moscow Government addressed the guests. He expressed his gratitude to VIAM for work on involving young people into high-technological branches of domestic industry. Evgeny Pribavchenko also reminded that the basis for holding the contest was a state plan of training of scientific workers, specialists and personnel for organizations of defensive-industrial sector.
Olga V. Pertseva, deputy Head of Department for work with post-graduates of Moscow Technological University (MIREA) told about advantages of the university, main directions of MIREA`s development, educational programs, its structure and infrastructure.
Aleksey G. Schlonsky, associate professor of MAI`s department “Technology of metal processing under pressure” reported, that graduates of MAI were in demand not only in aerospace field but also in other fields thanks to their obtained knowledge.
Denis A. Zhurikhin, representative of Dmitry Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (MUCTR) expressed his gratitude to the leadership of VIAM for the organization of the contest. According to him, “Materials scientist of the future” is an excellent start for young people, who want to devote their lives to science. Denis Zhurikhin also told about the university, departments and teaching staff, called the participants to enter MUCTR.
As Cand. of Sc. (Tech.) Mikhail M. Bakradze, Head of VIAM`s laboratory pointed out, that the contest “Materials scientist of the future” would help its participants to choose their right way, to obtain qualitative education with practical experience in one of the leading universities of Moscow. Besides, he spoke about technical equipment of VIAM, exciting mentoring system, which was very important to transfer experience and knowledge to the young employees of the institute.
Dmitry S. Lavrischev, Deputy Head of department “Scientific-analytical information and innovative project support” declared, that “materials science is one of the fundamental sciences in modern engineering. It is impossible to develop any key areas of technologically changing world without new materials”.
According to him, engineer is one of the demanded professions in our country. “Those basic fundamentals, which you obtain in technical university, can be used throughout your lifetime”, - he pointed out.
In conclusion, Evgeny Kablov answered the guests` questions and thanked the attendees for their attention, which they attracted to aviation materials science and wished them success.
It should be noted, that the guests got acquainted with an exposition, which presented advanced materials and articles from them, developed at VIAM.
Also schoolchildren, their parents and teachers had an opportunity to watch movies about VIAM and got acquainted with interactive presentation.
