On November 12, 2014, a meeting of experts commission of RAS department for chemistry and materials sciences to award the Gold Medal named after an outstanding scientist Dmitry K. Chernov was held the All-Russian scientific-research institute of aviation materials (VIAM). The event was headed by academician of RAS Evgeny N. Kablov, Director General of VIAM, who is the chairman of the experts commission.
During the meeting, the works submitted to competition and candidates for rewarding with the Medal were discussed.
Academicians of RAS Nikolay P. Alyoshin, Oleg A. Bannykh, Vyacheslav M. Buznik, Vladimir M. Novotortsev, Leonid A. Smirnov, the corresponding member of RAS Vladimir I. Lysak and Doctor of Science (Eng.) Victor M. Blinov have taken part in the event.
Let us remind that the Chernov Gold Medal is awarded since 1994 for outstanding works in the field of physics and chemistry of metallurgical processes and materials science. Twelve people only were awarded within this period.
FOR REFERENCE
Dmitry K. Chernov (November 1, 1839 - January 2, 1921) is the Russian metallurgist and inventor. He has made his main discovery in 1866 — 1868 when he stated that temperature variation causes changes of steel properties and polymorphic transformations. Chernov has calculated the points, which are known now as Chernov Points.
Ten years later, in 1879, Chernov has published the monograph «Researches related to structure of cast steel pigs» describing the main crystal structures in steel and their influence on characteristics of pigs. One of the types of steel crystals — dendritic one— has been called in his honor. Chernov has contributed to the theory of Siemens-Martin process used at operation of the open-hearth furnaces. He was one of the first who suggested to use pure oxygen for steelmaking (this technology was called as “converter process”). In addition, he studied possible applications of sponge iron, participated in the development of steel gun tubes, armor-piercing shells and in the development of aviation arising at that time.
