On April 12th, on the Cosmonautics Day, representatives of the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists of the All-Russian Scientific-Research Institute of Aviation Materials (NRC "Kurchatov Institute" - VIAM) laid flowers to the monument of Yuri Gagarin on Leninsky Avenue.
NRC "Kurchatov Institute" - VIAM made a contribution to development of the monument. Its authors had the task to choose an alloy that would allow them to express the idea of the monument. In 1979, sculptor Pavel Bondarenko and architect Yakov Belopolsky visited our institute, where they got acquainted with the developments in the field of titanium alloys. The specialists of the institute recommended the VT5L alloy for sculpture as the most technologically advanced casting alloy with a good shiny surface and color tone. Yakov Belopolsky chose the OT4-0 alloy for the sheets that covering the pedestal.
NRC "Kurchatov Institute" - VIAM performed a large amount of work, which ensured the development of the monument within the specified time.
In July 1980, before the Olympics, a solemn opening of the monument to Yu.A. Gagarin was held, who became the symbol of space conquest by man.
