NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM is the leading materials science of the Russian Federation.

It performs full innovative cycle from fundamental and applied researches to development of high-technology knowledge-intense production of materials of new generation, semi-finished products and unique technological equipment. It develops and supplies a wide range of metallic and non-metallic materials, coatings, technological processes and equipment, methods and means of protection against corrosion damages and biodeterioration.

NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM offers its developments for solving issues in aircraft and mechanical building, space industry, power engineering, building, medicine and other fields. 

NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM jointly with sectorial research institutes, design bureaus and universities have produced and mastered over 3200 grades of constructional and functional materials in industry.

The institute has organized 25 high-technology scientific and production complexes fitted with modern equipment, producing more than 234 items of materials for complex technical systems, military and special equipment.

Scientific and manufacturing complexes with the use of information technologies allow mastering energy- and material-saving technologies and transferring them to various sectors of economy.

The scientific council of the institute gave start in science to 206 Doctors and 803 Candidates of Sciences. At present, 2 Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 27 Doctors and 182 Candidates of Sciences, 12 Professors, 13 Associate Professors and 16 senior researchers, a total of more than 1,720 people, whose average age is 41 years old, and 800 of them are young professionals under the age of 35 years old work at the institute.

The scientific activity of the team of NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM is reflected in more than 100 monographs, 350 reference books, 11000 titles regulatory technical documentations on materials and technologies, including passports for materials, delivery documentations, technological recommendations, technical guidelines for production of materials and their application. The total number of patents and know-how exceeds 5,000 ones and over 130 developments are annually mastered.

NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM has concluded agreements with national research, federal universities, scientific organizations and enterprises of various industries, uniting personnel, intellectual, material-technical and information resources in order to solve scientific and technical issues and research and innovation activities in the field of materials science.

Under these agreements the institute fruitfully cooperates with the following organizations:

• 37 institutes of RAS;

• 12 national research universities;

• 17 leading technical universities and higher education institutes;

• over 150 scientific organizations and industrial enterprises.

The Institute conducts comprehensive researches on the development and application of new materials and technologies in the framework of long-term cooperation agreements with 14 regions of Russia as follows: the Republics of Mordovia, Sakha (Yakutia), Bashkortostan and Tatarstan; Saratov, Samara, Moscow, Tomsk and Ulyanovsk regions; Khabarovsk and Perm territories and others.

In 2002, 2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022  NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM was given letters of thanks of the President of the Russian Federation for its great contribution to the development of the aviation industry and military-industrial complex of the country.
