NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM has organized a system of continues training of highly-skilled personnel, which is carried out by leading specialists and scientists of NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM.

The first stage of the continuing education system is holding of annual contest “Materials scientist of the future” among pupils of 11^th grades, which is performed with the support of the Department of Science, industrial policy and entrepreneurship of Moscow. It helps to select talented persons and focus pointwise the training of future specialists at an early stage.

At the second stage, in the framework of target training, winners of the contest obtain higher education  according to the Bachelor Degree and the Specialist`s Degree programs in leading technical universities of the Russian Federation as follows: Bauman Moscow Technical University, Dmitry Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia, Moscow Technological University.

At the third stage, after successful graduation bachelors and specialists continue their education by the Master Degree program for the profession 22.04.01 “Materials science and materials engineering” according to intramural and extramural forms of study. A distinctive feature of education by the Master Degree program at NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM is the inextricable connection with production. Scope of practical knowledge is at least 70 per cent.

In future specialists solidify and expand theoretical knowledge, practical experience of work and participation in research and experimental development works according to postgraduate training program of NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM for the following professions: 22.06.01 “Materials engineering” (in the profiles “Metallurgical science and heat treatment of metals and alloys” and “Materials science (machine building)”) and 18.06.01 “Chemical technologies” (in the profile “Technology and processing of polymers and composites”).

NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM implements postgraduate courses for the following programs of further vocational education:

• Production of additively manufactured components from metallic materials, synthesized by selective laser melting.

• Non-metallic composite materials of new generation (carbon-, glass-, organic fiber-reinforced plastics and hybrid materials).

• Application of fractographic analysis while studying fracture pattern of GTE details.

• Method of electron microscopy for studying structure and properties of materials.

• Quality management system of testing laboratories (centers), accredited in certification systems GOST-R, AT OGA (aviation engineering and objects of civil aviation).   

• Nondestructive control methods and their application in aviation industry.

• Methods of mechanical tests of materials for aviation application.

• Analytical control of chemical composition of metals and alloys for aviation application in the conditions of modern production.

• Modern metallic materials and innovative technologies of their processing.

• Corrosion and modern methods of corrosion protection of metals and alloys.

• Application of thermal analysis when studying properties of materials.

• Materials for aviation application, technologies of their production as well as research and testing methods.

• Materials of new generation based on RM and REM and with their application and innovative technologies of their processing.

Dissertation Council D 403.001.01 functions at NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM to provide training of highly qualified personnel. During meetings of the dissertation council defense of theses on the degree of Candidate and Doctor of technical sciences is held for the following professions:

• 05.16.01 – “Metal science and heat treatment of metals and alloys”;

• 05.16.09 – “Materials science (machine building)”;

• 05.17.06 – “Technology and processing of polymers and composites”.

System training of personnel allows reducing the average age of the Institute’s employees from 61,5 years in 1997 to 41,7 years in 2016.
