On September 4 - 6 2013 representatives of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM) - Alexander Generalov and Alexander Boychuk participated in the 12th International Conference "Application of Contemporary Non-Destructive Testing in Engineering" (ICNDT 2013), which was held in Slovenia (Portorozh city).
In the course of the conference the following issues were discussed: the use of NDT methods for testing of structural elements; mathematical modeling in NDT; automation of NDT in manufacturing; innovation in NDT; estimation of detection, probabilistic assessment and evaluation of acceptability of defects; training, qualification and certification of the personnel and others.
Alexander Generalov made presentation "Evaluation of strength properties of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics using acoustic-ultrasonic method." He spoke about the basic principles of evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of materials using acoustic methods, about main areas of development in this field carried out at VIAM as well as he described correlation of the bending strength with SWF criterion obtained in the course of research.
The speaker highlighted that "the acoustic-ultrasonic method for assessing the strength properties can be widely used for different types of PCM with different schemes of reinforcement." The presentation attracted great interest among specialists. "The importance of such works was pointed out, especially for materials with high attenuation of ultrasound, testing of which by traditional methods is impossible", - said Alexander Generalov.
Alexander Boychuk made presentation on NDT of PCM using ultrasonic phased arrays. He spoke about advantages of this technology as compared to conventional ultrasonic methods and described the main types of defects detected during the testing. Separately, he commented issues related to the methods of recording the results of testing, determining the position and size of the detected defects.
After the presentation a number of questions was raised related to the testing of the radius areas of PCM structures. "Particular interest was given to the devices developed by specialists of VIAM for control of such areas as well as for control of curved surfaces", - noted Alexander Boychuk.
Professor Dzhanez Gram, chairman of the organizing committee of the conference, thanked the experts and management of VIAM for the opportunity to get familiar with the latest developments of the Institute in the field of non-destructive testing, wished the speakers success and expressed his wish to meet more often at such events.
We would like to remind that the organizers of the conference were the Slovenian Society for Nondestructive Testing, University of Ljubljana and the European Federation for Non-Destructive Testing.
