Development of composite industry in Russia was discussed at “Composite-Expo”
On February, 17, 2016 representatives of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM) such as: Alexander E. Raskutin, Deputy Head of scientific-research bureau «Polymer composite materials of new generation» and Ivan N. Gulyaev, Head of laboratory participated in a research and practical conference entitled “Current status and prospects for the development of production and application of composite materials in Russia”.
The meeting was held within the framework of the 9th International Specialized Exhibition “Composite-Expo” and VIAM acted as the co-organizer of the conference. In particular, key issues of development of industry and application of composite materials in Russia were considered at the conference. The attendees shared their experience on issues of design, operation and modernization of equipment. Representatives of scientific community, companies engaged in output of composites and consumers of that product also took part in the event.
Within the framework of the forum, the representatives of VIAM made reports. So, Alexander Raskutin spoke about a complex innovative project in terms of which VIAM jointly with JSC “NIIgrafit” developed manufacturing technologies for arched constructions from carbon fibers: they would be used in the construction of small-sized road bridges with the span length up to 15 meters. “We plan to build the first bridge in the village of Yazykova, in Karsunsky District of Ulyanovsk Oblast in 2016”, - he pointed out.
Besides, Alexander Raskutin informed that “New low-viscous epoxy vinyl ester no-bake binder (VSV-43 grade) was developed at VIAM within the project and VKU-51 carbon fiber and VPS-58 fiberglass were produced on the base of VSV-43 binder”. According to him, stress-strain properties of these materials are not inferior to the world analogues. The carbon fiber and the fiberglass showed good resistance to aggressive environments and climatic factors.
Then Ivan Gulyaev made a report “Polymer composite materials of new generation for aerospace engineering”. In particular, he pointed out, that “The development of modern polymer binders allows to spread the field of application of polymer composite materials (PCM) and manufacturing technologies of parts and constructions from them.
According to him, non-autoclave technologies are becoming increasingly wide spread, allowing to produce PCM with properties similar to the properties of composites, which are developed with the use of autoclave technologies, but without the use of expensive equipment.
As Ivan Gulyaev declared, since 2005 VIAM had developed more than 30 new binders, processed both by use of traditional prepreg technologies and technologies of vacuum infusion.
“About 70 grades of PCM of new generation have been developed on their base, applying in advanced articles of aviation engineering”, - he pointed out.
Head of VIAM`s laboratory informed that the certification had been carried out for all materials developed at VIAM. “A special qualification was performed for a number of polymer composite materials within the framework of certification for PD-14 advanced engine. Also production and output of prepregs of these grades of PCM have been arranged at VIAM”, - Ivan Gulyaev pointed out.
