On January 27, 2014 the delegation of the All-Russian scientific-research institute of aviation materials headed by academician of RAS Evgeny N. Kablov, Director General of VIAM, visited JSC “Scientific and Production Association Saturn” (NPO Saturn) located in Rybinsk, Yaroslavl region.
During the visit, representatives of VIAM have examined the design, experimental, research and production base of the enterprise. A meeting with participation of Ilya N. Fedorov, managing director of NPO Saturn also took place. The Parties have discussed the further prospects of cooperation in the field of domestic engine building.
As Evgeny Kablov declared, «thanks to our long-term cooperation, a huge work on research, testing and implementation of advanced materials and technologies in production of gas turbine engines was done». «This process has to promote the further expansion of the market of new materials and technologies applicable to innovative projects in the engine building industry», – he emphasized.
As Evgeny Kablov reported «in this regard the main activities of VIAM are directed to development of heat-resistant alloys, coatings and ceramic structural materials». In his opinion, polymer composite materials have to find a broader application in the structure of GTE of the new generation. «The weight of the engine and its power efficiency will depend on it», – emphasized the head of VIAM.
Then, Evgeny Kablov noted that «our institute express an interest in prospects of the use of 3D-prototyping technology». «All necessary conditions are created at VIAM for the work in this new and, undoubtedly, a very important area», – he emphasized.
The head of VIAM assessed activities of the design bureau of NPO Saturn very positively: «The Rybinsk design bureau always was and traditionally remains one of the best in the state. Today its activity made a very strong impression on me also. There is a lot of youth, very good up-to-date research and experimental equipment. And the most important is the joint works, which we conduct together with the design bureau to create an engine of the second phase for our prospective aviation complex».
In addition, Evgeny Kablov told the top managers of NPO Saturn about new prospective developments of the institute and strategic directions of the development of materials and technologies for their processing for the period up to 2030.
Within the frame of the United Engine Corporation (UEC), NPO Saturn and some enterprises of Perm, including JSC Aviadvigatel, were included in the divisional structure «Engines for civil aviation».
Let us remind that a Cooperation agreement between VIAM and NPO Saturn was signed in 2012. According to this document, the Parties agreed to carry out joint scientific and technical policy in the field of development and implementation of advanced materials and technologies in production of gas turbine engines.
